DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN DENGUE AND CHIKUNGUNYA

The Genesis

Historically, Chikungunya was referred to as Dengue. It was only after an outbreak of Chikungunya in Makonde Plateau, somewhere near Tanzania, that it was identified as a separate disease.

Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne disease. It is spread by numerous species of the Aedes mosquito. Dengue has become a global cause of concern ever since the commencement of the Second World War.

Similarly, Chikungunya is an infection caused by the Chikungunya virus. This virus is transferred by two species of the same Aedes type mosquitoes. Chikungunya virus was first isolated by RW Ross in 1953. In India, Chikungunya was never a bigger cause of concern as compared to Dengue, especially in northern India. However, since 2016, there has been an increase in the cases of Chikungunya.

What’s common between Dengue and Chikungunya?

First of all, mosquito bite is the main cause of Chikungunya and Dengue. Both the diseases are caused by a female mosquito also commonly known by the name Aedes.

Other common things between Dengue and Chikungunya are:

  1. Dengue and Chikungunya diseases are more common in the tropical and sub-tropical climates. India is one such country where it rains and rains continuously for many months. This is the reason people in India face the threat of these vector-borne diseases.
  2. Every year millions of people are affected by Dengue and Chikungunya all across the globe. Thousands in India are also infected with these diseases every year. Deaths are also caused due to mosquito-borne diseases. Therefore, you should know that these diseases are killers and it is important to kill the cause before it kills you. We will discuss about prevention later in the blog.

How to know the difference between Dengue and Chikungunya?

Despite being quite similar, both the diseases are very much different. Due to sharing quite similar signs, it becomes difficult in identifying the exact problem. Some of the differences in both the viral infections are:

  1. Dengue and Chikungunya, though carried by the same mosquito type, but are caused by different viruses. While Chikungunya is caused by a Togaviridae alphavirus, Dengue is caused by a Flavirideae flavivirus.
  2. The incubation period of Chikungunya is of 1-12 days and the duration varies from one to two weeks. However, signs such as joint pain may stay for a long time. The incubation period for dengue is of 3-7 weeks while it stays from about four to seven weeks.
  3. Swelling and pain is high in Chikungunya as compared to that in Dengue.
  4. Chikungunya can cause tremendous joint pain. Whereas Dengue can cause bleeding in some cases, breathing problems, etc.
  5. In Chikungunya, rashes all across the face, palms, feet, limbs can be found whereas, in Dengue, rashes are limited to limbs and face.
  6. Complications such as chronic arthritis and rare neurological problems are possible in Chikungunya. In severe cases of Dengue, respiratory problems, organ failure or shock can be caused. Arthritis is absent in Dengue.
